About Forest Awakenings
Humans evolved, body and mind, in relationship to the natural world but in the clamor of modern life, it’s easy to lose touch. The daily grind of contemporary life wears on us in ways both subtle and indisputable.
To promote health and wellbeing, Forest Awakenings offers walks inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, a mental and physical restorative treatment that prescribes “bathing” in the forest.
Our walks follow a research-based framework developed by the international Association for Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT) designed to build reciprocal relationships with the natural world.
A sense of just enjoying the forest is something that I’ve lost because of the years of focus on the many threats our natural areas face and the urgency to protect our vanishing ecosystems. It felt so good to leave that behind! It also surprised me that as someone who spends so much time in the forest, that I could enjoy heightened senses- the smells and colors gradually became more vibrant, and that my perspective could be changed.

What to Expect on a Forest Walk
Every Forest Therapy walk is a unique dialogue between people and the More Than Human World.
Although we may notice and appreciate plants and animals, it is not a nature walk where the focus is on identification or collection. Although we may walk on trails, it is not a hike where the goal is exercise or to arrive at a destination.
Rather, Forest Therapy walks are guided, relaxed, sensory experiences full of wander and wonder.
