What to Expect on a Forest Walk
What to expect
Every Forest Therapy walk is a unique dialogue between people and the More Than Human World.
Although we may notice and appreciate plants and animals, it is not a nature walk where the focus is on identification or collection. Although we may walk on trails, it is not a hike where the goal is exercise or to arrive at a destination.
Rather, Forest Therapy walks are guided, relaxed, sensory experiences full of wander and wonder.
I had a wonderful experience today in a state park that I often visit. Today however was different… I was guided in being in my surroundings with all of my senses as well as introduced to the history of the area and peoples who enjoyed the area through history. It was a wonderful way to spend the morning.

More about Forest Awakenings’ Guided Forest Therapy Walks:
- A typical Forest Awakenings walk lasts from 2 to 4 hours and may traverse 1 to 3 miles with longer walks possible.
- Because no two walks are alike, it's a practice meant to be enjoyed again and again.
- Groups range in size from 12 to 25 and may be drawn from one organization or become acquainted at the trailhead.
- Ages range from 18 to 95, with children in the company of adults.
- Guides are certified in wilderness first aid by NOLS and trails are carefully chosen to provide a positive, hospitable and safe experience.
- Remote walks using mobile devices are available when weather or health concerns restrict on-site gatherings.
The walks are entirely invitational, so there is no pressure to do or say anything unless you feel so inclined. There is no expectation that you will have a prescribed response and no judgement if you laugh, cry, dance or leave. Nature accepts all lives in all seasons.
